Appo's Carrier is Player of the Year, leads All-State baseball team

Appoquinimink center fielder Lorenzo Carrier is the Player of the Year and heads the All-State baseball team selected by the Delaware Baseball Coaches Association.

The 6-foot-6 Carrier hit .547 with four home runs, four triples and 11 doubles in 53 at-bats this spring. He also drove in 36 runs and was perfect in 22 stolen-base attempts for the Jaguars.

The senior has signed to play college baseball at Miami (Florida), but is also expected to be selected in the Major League Baseball draft this summer.

Carrier leads a list of 13 first-team All-State players, along with fellow outfielders Mike Mallamaci of Archmere, Jonathan Stokley of Sussex Tech and Alec Rodriguez of Dover.

The first-team pitchers are Zach Hart of St. Georges and Christian Colmery of St. Mark’s, with Sussex Tech’s Jason Shockley voted as the top catcher.

The first-team infielders are Sussex Central’s A.J. Cannon (first base), Smyrna’s Connor Strauss (second base), Conrad’s Tyler Pirrung (third base) and Concord’s Luke Gabrysh (shortstop).

Middletown’s Zak Sophy was voted the top designated hitter, and Delmarva Christian’s Riley Culver made the first team as a utility player.

The Coach of the Year is St. Georges’ Jeff Rodgers, who guided the Hawks to a 16-2 regular season and the No. 1 seed in the DIAA Baseball Tournament.

Tower Hill’s Paul Gillerlain was named the Assistant Coach of the Year.
