Former Gov. Jack Markell to lead Afghan resettlement efforts for Biden administration

President Joe Biden has named former Delaware Gov. Jack Markell to temporarily lead the coordination of Afghan evacuees resettling in the United States, the Washington Post reported Friday.

A longtime supporter of Biden, Markell is expected to work with Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and White House domestic and national security policy advisers, the Post reported. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is overseeing efforts to resettle evacuees.

Markell, who previously served as state treasurer, served as Delaware's governor from 2009 to 2017. He now is the president of his own consulting firm and was the former senior vice president of Comcast Corp. and Nextel Communications.

He has been nominated by Biden to serve as the U.S. ambassador to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Markell will need to be confirmed by the U.S. Senate. The OECD is headquartered in Paris.
