Delaware will spend $50 million in federal stimulus funds on a new hospital for the chronically ill in Smyrna, officials announced on Wednesday.

Officials say the 90-year-old Delaware Hospital for the Chronically Ill on Sunnyside Road in Smyrna needs to be replaced.

Building the 72,000-square-foot facility will create up to 300 construction jobs and employ nearly 500 hospital staff, according to a press release from Gov. John Carney's office.

The funding comes from the American Rescue Plan, a $1.9 trillion federal stimulus package that President Joe Biden signed into law in March.

In total, it gave $1 billion to Delaware for state projects including COVID-19 response, wastewater projects, broadband and rehiring in the private sector.

Carney announced this week that the state is spending another $50 million in American Rescue Plan money on job training for unemployed people and students in public middle and high schools.

The state is spending another $110 million of the funds on broadband.
