Husband named suspect in Wyoming murder/suicide

Staff reports

A woman found dead Thursday in a bedroom of her Wyoming home was identified March 29 by Delaware State Police as Janice L. Wyatt, 57.

Wyatt's husband, who was found critically injured in the same room, was identified as Jay A. Wyatt, 56. Delaware State Police spokesman Master Cpl. Gary W. Fournier said Jay Wyatt is considered the suspect in the death of Janice Wyatt.

Jay Wyatt, who was admitted to a local hospital after he and his wife were discovered by a relative, died the afternoon of March 29, Fournier said.

The couple was discovered at approximately 11 a.m. March 28 by a relative, who called another family member who called 911.

Janice Wyatt's remains were taken by the state Medical Examiner's Office to Georgetown, where an autopsy, conducted March 29, determined the cause of death to be a gunshot wound to the upper torso.

The medical examiner listed the death as a homicide.

An autopsy on Jay Wyatt to determine the cause and manner of his death has been carried out, but the results have not been released.

The case is considered a murder/suicide, Fournier said, adding that no motive for Janice Wyatt's killing has been established.

As of April 2, the case is still open and police are continuing their investigative work, Fournier said.
